The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Balochistan chief secretary (CS) to appear in court today (Thursday) and inform it about the steps taken so far to control the worsening law and order in the province.
A three-member Supreme Court bench of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali and Justice Ghulam Rabbani was hearing a petition filed by Balochistan High Court Bar Association President Hadi Shakeel Ahmed against the unabated incidents of target killings and abductions for ransom across the province.
Expressing concern over the recent incidents of target killings in the province, the court said the chief secretary was bound to protect the life and property of the people per Article 9. The SC also asked the provincial government to provide details of compensation given to the families of the people killed in targeted attacks so far.
At the outset of the hearing, the chief justice asked Balochistan Advocate General Amanullah Kunrani about the recent incidents of target killing, in which 11 people were killed in the province. Kunrani said the incidents had been a result of sectarian violence, in which people of Shia sect were targeted. He contended that the law and order was better compared to the past, adding that a committee headed by the Balochistan chief minister and consisting of several politicians had been formed to discuss the concerns of the people.
