The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide technical and financial assistance to eradicate pollution from Gujranwala as has prepared a master plan with the coordination of the city district government. In this connection, a meeting was held at the DCO office in which JICA Chief Coordinator Nasir Ahmad, Coordinator Ms Nadia and Ms Suzuki Representative discussed the matter with DCO Nabil Awan, Solid Waste Management (SWM) District Officer (DO) Dr Muhammad Shahid, Executive District Officer (EDO) Waheed Ahmad Butt and Community Development (CD) EDO Tariq Mahmood. The JICA offered 90 percent financial assistance for the collection of solid waste along with modern machinery, technology and expert engineers.
The DCO said the summary of the master plan was being submitted to the Punjab chief minister. He added the JICA’s master plan would help clean the city and solve the problem of disposing of solid waste. A project to establish solid waste management institution to dump and re-process solid waste is also included in the master plan which will be beneficial for the city in the coming years.
CENTRAL JAIL OVERCROWDED: More than 400 per cent prisoners than its capacity have been forced to live in the Central Jail Gujranwala while the department has not so far sanctioned Rs 2.5 million to complete eight new barracks for the inmates.
Superintendent Malik Zia-ud-Din told this to District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital Medical Superintendent Captain Dr Zafar Iqbal during his visit of the jail. The jail has the capacity of less than 1,000 prisoners while it houses nearly 4,500 and the administration is trying to facilitate them in accordance with the jail manual, he added. MS Dr Zafar Iqbal, DMS Dr Sarfraz Ahmad Khokhar and Sanitary Inspector Nadeem Cheema visited all the barracks, washrooms, store, kitchen and the jail hospital to review the health conditions and proposed some improvements.
12 FILLING STATIONS SEALED: Judicial Magistrate Yasir Hayat raided and sealed 12 tampered machines at different filling stations, including police and army welfare petrol pumps, for supplying less fuel. Reportedly, the judicial magistrate along with Labour Officer Amjad Ali and police raidedt different filling stations in the city and found 12 tampered weighing machines. Moreover, the Gujranwala district and sessions judge has also asked the judicial magistrate to hear the cases of tampered weighing machines.
