Tradition in Pakistani context and its impact on art discussed

The Poppy Seed Gallery and Baytunur, in collaboration with the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture (IVSAA) and Iqbal Academy Pakistan (IAP), recently organised a seminar titled ‘Tradition & Art.’ The seminar discussed the various ways in which tradition is understood in the Pakistani context and how these views impact the understanding and practice of art.
The first session, which was titled ‘Tradition: Continuity and Rupture’, discussed the perspectives on tradition within the Pakistani and South Asian context. It was moderated by IVSAA Assistant Professor Aisha Darr. Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) Associate Professor Dr Ejaz Akram talked on the topic titled ‘What is Tradition?’, whereas University of Karachi Associate Professor Dr Wahab Suri talked on the topic titled ‘Truth and Method: The Dilemma of Postcolonial, Developing Societies in Post-modern Intellectualism.’
Furthermore, IAP Director M Suheyl Umar spoke on the topic titled ‘From Tradition to Fundamentalism’, whereas LUMS Associate Professor Dr Basit Koshul spoke on the topic titled ‘The Place of Tradition in the Globalised World.’ The second session was titled ‘Tradition and the Arts’ and it was moderated by IVSAA Assistant Professor Taimur Suri. Baytunur Trustee Taimoor Khan Mumtaz talked on the topic titled ‘The Tradition View of Art’, whereas artist and independent curator Naiza Khan talked on the topic titled ‘Between the Temple and the Playground: The Nature of the Non-traditional.’
Furthermore, Salwat Ali – art critic for a daily newspaper and a monthly magazine – spoke on the topic titled ‘The Art of Becoming’, whereas Poppy Seed Gallery Curator Sumbul Khan spoke on the topic titled ‘The Local-Global Dilemma’.
