Argentina’s Ambassador to Pakistan Rodolf J Martin Saravia said that his country was ready to extend all necessary technical assistance to Pakistan to overcome the energy crisis. Addressing a gathering of industrialists at the Multan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), he said Pakistan and Argentina enjoy strong trade and cultural ties. However, chambers of commerce and industry of the two countries should explore more areas where it is possible to strengthen trade ties further and provide more facilities to the people.
He said Pakistan is facing a major energy crisis and Argentina could help Pakistan link the systems installed at depleted gas wells to the newly explored wells which are rich in natural gas reserves. The two countries were already engaged in bio gas plants initiative, he added. It was noted that Argentina was extending aid to Pakistan in the CNG sector and that the two countries were now engaged in trying to run environment friendly CNG buses in 10 major cities of Pakistan that would provide cheaper transportation facilities to the people.
He identified South Punjab as rich in agriculture and livestock and said that Argentina would work in partnership with the private sector on different initiatives in food processing, livestock and agriculture.
The ambassador said a MoU had been signed with Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) on research and transfer of technology while other MoUs were inked with different Pakistani firms for proper harvesting of mango, its packing and handling of other post-harvest stages.
He underlined that the CNG sector was consuming only four to five percent of the total gas production and added that gas shortage problem could be overcome through planning. He said that Iran-Pakistan-India-Turkmenistan gas pipeline project would also help end gas shortage in Pakistan. He went on to say that Argentina was providing medicines for cancer treatment at half the actual price after signing an agreement with a Lahore based firm. Advanced technology and technical assistance was also being extended under this agreement, he added.
He said Argentina would also launch an initiative on Halal food in partnership with Pakistani investors in Lahore, Karachi and South Punjab that will help Pakistan benefit from Halal food markets all over the world. He said it could attract Middle East market to import Halal food from Pakistan for being a cost effective option in comparison to import from US and Australia. To a question from women entrepreneurs, he promised full support to them in displaying products prepared by skilled women of the area.
The products depicting heritage of South Punjab can attract buyers in international markets, he observed. Earlier, MCCI president Shahid Nasim Khokhar urged Argentina to manufacture cylinders and CNG equipment in Pakistan under transfer of technology agreements pleading that Pakistan was one of the biggest users of CNG.
