US-Yemeni cleric and terror suspect Anwar al-Awlaqi escaped unhurt from a US drone attack which killed two local Al-Qaeda members in the restive south of Yemen, a tribal source told AFP Saturday.
A US drone had on Thursday targeted Awlaqi’s car at Abadan in Shabwa province, where Al-Qaeda is well entrenched, the source from Awlaqi’s tribe said.
His car was untouched but another car was hit, killing the two local Al-Qaeda men travelling in it, the source added.
The attempt on Awlaqi came three days after US forces killed Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden in a secret commando operation carried out in Pakistan where he had been hiding for several years.
American media had earlier reported that the drone attack failed to hit Awlaqi, who is linked to Al-Qaeda and who is suspected of orchestrating terrorist attacks on the US.
