The Parliamentary Committee on Judges Appointment Tuesday summoned the law minister and secretary besides the Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) today (Thursday) to review the reconstitution of the committee after the PML-Q’s move to join the government. The committee held a meeting with Senator Nayyar Hussain Bukhari in the chair to review the PML-N’s letter seeking reconstitution of the committee under Article 175-A of the Constitution after inclusion of PML-Q in the government alliance.
Talking to media after the meeting, Bukhari said the demand by the PML-N was considered in detail and they also discussed whether the committee should be reconstituted or not, adding that federal minister, secretary and attorney general had been asked give a briefing on the legal aspects of the issue. He said the committee only deliberated over the PML-N’s demand and did not review the recommendations by the Judicial Commission.
Senator Ishaq Dar said after the inclusion of PML-Q in the federal cabinet, proceedings of the committee would be unconstitutional and illegal because the committee now had six members from the government and two from the opposition. He urged the government to decide about the two members to be dropped from the committee after which the opposition would nominate two names.
Responding a question, Nisar said he was thankful to the parliamentary committee for not holding any proceedings because if they had made any decision it would have been illegal.
