Transporters have demanded that the government should provide protection for the public vehicles plying on the roads of the city. The damage caused to the transporters’ vehicles during violence in the city not only causes heavy financial losses, but also puts the lives of drivers, conductors and passengers at risk, Karachi Transport Action Committee President Ashraf Banglori and other members of the body said in a joint statement issued on Tuesday.
“This situation, despite the presence of agencies responsible for maintaining peace, is beyond comprehension,” they added. They demanded that an efficient strategy must be urgently evolved to counter unscrupulous and mischievous elements responsible for creating a law and order situation in the city.
The transporters also sought early compensation for the losses they suffered as in many cases, the vehicles were irreparably damaged. They said immediate steps must be taken for the protection of rickshaws, taxis, wagons and buses providing citizens easy means to commute from one part of the city to another.
