The final round of talks between President Asif Zardari and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) resulted in a significant breakthrough on Tuesday with the MQM likely to take a final decision on the party’s return to the federal cabinet within the next 48 hours after consultation with its party chief Altaf Hussain.
MQM’s return to the federal cabinet would prove to be a respite for the PML-Q leadership which is desperate to see its “strategic allies” back in the federal cabinet as part of its agenda of formation of a broad-based government. A well-placed source told Pakistan Today that soon after the MQM delegation’s meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari, Sindh Governor Ishratul Ebad, Dr Farooq Sattar and Babar Ghauri would either leave for London or the party would have a conference meeting via telephone with its chief Altaf Hussain to take the final decision.
In their meeting with Zardari earlier, the MQM delegation assured the president that party ministers would rejoin the federal cabinet when the killers of MQM activists were arrested, the source said, adding that both sides were sceptical of each others’ commitment towards restoration of peace in Karachi and both camps came up with a few conditions for carrying forward the mutual cooperation. “During the meeting, the MQM delegation urged President Asif Ali Zardari to talk to MQM chief Altaf Hussain and assure him on the government’s commitment to capture the killers of the MQM activists.
Later, during the meeting, President Zardari phoned Altaf and both leaders agreed to take concrete measures for the security of life and property of the citizens of Karachi,” the source said. The president expressed grief on the killings of MQM leaders and workers, also assured Altaf that those behind the killings would be brought to book, the source said. “Furthermore, the MQM delegation reiterated their nine-point agenda to be made a part of the budget-making process with a focus on decreasing POL prices, and relief for the people in price hike and law and order.
