The plan to provoke violence in Karachi would be foiled, Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said on Tuesday. Those violating the law would be dealt with sternly,” he added. The minister said that the patrolling of police and other law enforcement agencies has been enhanced and the crackdown against criminals is continuing. “Dozens of miscreants have been arrested,” he added.
He further said that the traders would be provided protection by the government. “Maintaining law and order in the province, especially in Karachi, is a priority for the government,” he said. He was of the view that all the democratic and patriotic forces would have to work jointly for restoring peace in Karachi. The minister said that this is the time that every one should supplement the government’s efforts for the progress and development as well as the maintenance of law and order in the city.
FUND FOR HEIRS OF “MARTYRED” JOURNALISTS: A fund has been created under the auspices of the Sindh Information Department for providing heirs of “martyred” journalists with financial assistance, provincial information minister has announced. He was speaking at a seminar organised at the Information Department in connection with the World Press Freedom Day. The minister said that the efforts of the department would be to provide a job to a family member of martyred journalists.
He said that for the first time in the country’s history, a martyr gallery would be set up at the Information Department. “This would be aimed at highlighting the services of the journalist community,” he added. Memon was of the view that democracy and journalism are inter-linked. He said that the promotion of free and healthy journalism is essential for a strong democracy and the strengthening of democratic institutions. The minister said that the government believes in freedom of the press and would assist journalists in performing their duties.
