Despite sizzling heat the number of customers at Sunday bazaars of the city increased, as the prices of vegetables decreased.
Since it was the first Sunday of the month, the number of customers was more than usual. However, the cleanliness condition in Green Town, Johar Town, Mughalpura and Wahdat Road Sunday bazaars remained poor.
The vendors said their sales were 20 to 30 percent higher than the previous weeks’, adding that the weather was harsh but had no significant impact on the number of customers. “There were fewer customers in the previous weeks but this week, my sales increased,” said a vendor Qayyum Khan, adding that the majority of people had received their salaries and were buying maximum items at the start of the month.
Another vendor Zafar Hussain at Green Town Sunday bazaar said he used to sell around 70-80 kilogrammes of onion in normal days but this Sunday he sold more than 100kg of onion. He said it was a normal cycle that the sales were higher at the beginning of the month and dropped as the month progressed. “This week, the prices of vegetables were low therefore it impacted the sales positively,” he added.
The customers welcomed the reduction in prices but showed displeasure over the level of cleanliness. They said the administration of Sunday bazaars should pay attention on hygiene. “It is good that the prices are stable and in some cases decreased but the management should also check the cleanliness conditions, as it may cause diseases,” said a housewife Ayesha Baig. Meanwhile, the prices of onion, ginger, garlic, tomatoes and cucumber reduced Rs 2-10 per kg while the prices of potatoes increased by Rs 2 per kg. Onions were sold for Rs 14 per kg, whereas last week it was available for Rs 16 per kg.
Ginger was sold for Rs 102 per kg while last week its price remained Rs 107 per kg. Similarly, the prices of tomatoes also reduced Rs 5 per kg and it was sold for Rs 22 per kg.
