The people of Tharparkar require modern infrastructure facilities, Senator Gul Mohammad said in a statement issued on Sunday.
“There should be a modern university in Thar that would provide standard education to the youth of that district as well as other districts including Mirpurkhas, Badin and Umerkot,” he said.
Describing the difficulties faced by the youth of Thar, he said that they are very talented and have the potential to serve their country, but it is not possible for every youth to go to Hyderabad or Karachi for higher education due to a lack of resources and increasing poverty. “There are over 300,000 unemployed youths in Thar and they are unable to continue their education as there was no institution for this after the intermediate level in Thar,” he said.
Referring to the problem of drinking water in the district, he said that the government has already initiated the project for setting up 46 reverse osmosis plants in the province. “President Asif Ali Zardari has approved this project for the people of Thar,” he added.
The senator said that the drinking water available in Thar does not meet the standards set by the WHO as it contains total dissolved solids.
He said that according to the WHO, 600 TDS is the limit for drinking water but the water available in Thar contains up to 8,000 TDS.
“This is very dangerous for humans and can cause various diseases including fluorosis, hepatitis and kidney failure. Due to TDS in water, 25 percent of the population in Thar is suffering from these diseases,” he pointed out. He said that about 1,000 teachers are required for the schools in Thar and the schools currently present in the district do not fulfill the requirements of primary education.
“Therefore, there must be more schools and teachers,” he added. The senator also demanded that the Sindh government should carry out a revenue survey in the two tehsils of Thar – Deplo and Mithi. “People are facing difficulties due to the absence of a survey record,” he added.
