Four people, including two Customs officers, were acquitted by a special court for control of narcotic substances in a drugs trafficking case on Saturday
After completing the proceedings and listening to arguments from both sides, the judge ordered the release of all four suspects, declaring that no proof against the alleged accused could be proven by the prosecution for the men’s involvement in smuggling drugs to Dubai.
In 1998, a container sent from the Karachi port was seized by the Dubai government for containing 1,550 kg of hashish (charas). The authorities in Dubai informed the Pakistani government and demanded that those responsible for sending the shipment be arrested for smuggling narcotics.
The Pakistani authorities ordered the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) to conduct investigation and arrest the persons responsible. After investigating the records, the ANF had arrested two Customs officers named Illahi Bux Soomro and Abdul Jabbar, clearing Agent Abdul Rasheed Soorti and currency dealer Muhammad Irfan. The case was sent to the anti-narcotics court for proceedings, while the suspects were released on bail after some time.
In a separate case, the same court awarded seven years rigorous imprisonment and Rs 30,000 fine on Abdul Sattar alias Ghora for involvement in drug trafficking.
According to the prosecution, Sattar was arrested by the Jackson police on December 12, 2010 and 110 grams hashish recovered from his possession.
