Muhammed Rehman of Royal Palm got off to a brilliant start in the 54-hole Chief of Naval Staff Golf Championship at the Royal Palm Golf Course by posting an opening round score of gross 71, one under par, to take the lead at the end of the first round. Out of the 72 amateur golfers striving for the honours, the efforts of emerging talent like Wazir Ali, Sufian Dhodhak, Capt Ansar Mehmood, Mahad Zafar and of course M Rehman were noticeable.
Amongst them, Muhammed Rehman was the one who rode high on confidence, enjoying a virtually flawless round that included 15 regulation pars, two birdies resulting from confident putts and just one blemish through a bogie on the second hole, a 205 yards par 3, all due to an errant tee shot. “I am very happy with how I’ve played in the first round, with tee shots all accurate and the one wood doing wonders on all par 5’s and I shall continue in the same forceful manner,” said Rehman.
Another youngster who showed his appetite for winning was Waseem Rana who played consistently well. The double bogie on the 10th hole turned out to be a dampner, and with a gross round of 73, he is placed two strokes behind the leader. “I am not too disappointed with my performance. In spite of the double stroke loss on the tenth hole, I managed to keep up my momentum. I look forward to the match with Rehman on the second day,” he said.
Besides Rehman and Wasim, others who made an impact were Sufian Dhodak (Karachi) with a gross score of 74, and four others at gross 76: Capt Anser Mehmood (Navy), Wazir Ali (Royal Palm), Sardar Murad (Royal Palm), and Asad Amin Sheikh (Quiz). The competition will definitely be fierce over the next two rounds. The Seniors take the field today.
