A Korean power company has expressed keen interest in setting up wind power plants in the wind corridor of Sindh for generating 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity in the next five years. The subject came under discussion at a meeting between Korea Southern Power Company Ltd (KOSPO) delegation led by Park Seog-Ho and Adviser to Sindh Chief Minister on Investment Zubair Motiwala at the latter’s office on Friday.
Hyundai Corporation General Manager Jin Han Chung and Sindh Board of Investment (SBI) Secretary Mohammad Younus Dagha were also present on the occasion. The Korean delegation members also made a commitment to generate at least 2,000MW of electricity from wind power in next two years. They said that KOSPO was producing 9,238MW of power from coal, LNG, oil and wind in Korea with an investment of $5 billion, while the company also engaged in producing electricity in the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Bulgaria.
The Hyundai Corp representative also showed intention of putting up a wind turbine manufacturing plant in Pakistan to cater to the needs of turbines in other wind energy projects. Hyundai is already manufacturing 2MW wind turbines. Chung also showed interest in power generation from Thar coal. Motiwala thanked the delegation members and assured them of his full cooperation in identifying suitable land in the province’s wind corridor for the project in accordance with the government’s investment friendly policies.
It was agreed at the meeting that the SBI will formulate a schedule for signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for this project during the visit of the Sindh chief minister to South Korea from May 17 to 28.
