Lahoris joined three billion people across the globe on Friday to watch the British royal wedding between Prince William, second in line to the throne, and his fiancée Catherine Middleton, on TV. The royal wedding remained the hot topic for youth in schools, colleges and varsities, whereas some citizens also remembered Prince William’s late mother Lady Diana on the historic day. Pakistan Today’s website also showed the live streaming of the wedding.
The hype created by the print and electronic media forced the citizens to remain glued to their TVs the whole day. People said that they could not forget Lady Diana, as she had a special association with Pakistan. Commenting about Catherine Middleton, citizen Zeeshan wrote on the Internet, “She is not like Diana. Otherwise she is ok and like a normal girl. Diana was very good Mashallah!”
Commenting on the dresses of the royal couple, people expressed mixed reactions on social networking site Twitter. Some termed the dresses as gorgeous whereas others remained reluctant to appreciate them.
Daughter of former PM Benazir Bhutto and President Asif Ali Zardari, Asifa Bhutto Zardari, tweeted some days ago that she was not invited to the wedding but would watch it on TV. Asifa tweeted, “Getting excited for the upcoming royal marriage, I wish Prince William and his future wife a long and happy life together”. Commenting on Kate Middleton’s dress, she said, “Catherine Middleton’s dress is gorgeous!” A friend of Lady Diana and former wife of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, Jemima Khan also tweeted about the wedding.
Most of her tweets were about remembering Diana. Some of her yesterday’s tweets were “I know William is close to Camilla-who I like-and this must have been what he wanted. Just can’t help missing my friend Diana today.”, “No offence to Camilla but I’d have preferred-out of respect-that no one had substituted for mother of the groom at register signing.” Newspapers published special stories and TV channels telecast the event live. Pakistan Today’s website also gave special coverage to the wedding, as it kept on posting memorable pictures with live coverage.
