Doctors term Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Mian Shahbaz Sharif’s announcement of establishing a state-of-the-art transplantation centre on the land retrieved by the government a waste of time and resources, Pakistan Today has learnt. In a meeting on April 14, the CM had directed the Lahore commissioner to prepare a feasibility report for establishing a transplantation centre on Lawrence Road on the land retrieved by the city government in the encroachment drive. Transplantation being unpopular, the doctors called this idea of transplantation centre as a waste of public money and time. The Punjab Health Department is going through a tough time especially after the floods.
Almost all medical projects had stopped and the construction of hospital buildings had halted. Finances have always been an issue for the Health Department, which has not raised the doctors’ salaries yet. Under such a situation, the doctors believe that establishing an organ transplant centre is a bad idea because it will cost a lot of money and it was not needed because transplantation was not a common practice. They said that in Pakistan due to religious reasons, relatives of a dead person won’t allow doctors to extract organs from a body. “Due to religious and social limitations, transplantation is not accepted openly in our society,” said a doctor seeking anonymity.
“If the transplantation centre cannot be used properly, I see no reason for the Punjab Health Department to waste public money on a project like this,” he added. Doctors propose that funds should be spent on other important developments such as a cancer awareness campaign.
