Following the devastating tsunami in Japan that, aside from the massive loss of life, has posted a big question mark over the safety of nuclear power plants in the world, Pakistan has also moved to take precautionary measures for its nuclear power plant in Karachi.
According to sources, the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (KANUPP), Pakistan’s first nuclear energy plant of 137 megawatts (MW), already well past its 30 years of design life since start of commercial operations in 1972, was currently going through a complete overhaul and maintenance focused specifically on safeguarding the old plant against any damage similar to the one Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant suffered in the tsunami.
The power plant, located at Hawks Bay Depot, had been dysfunctional for more than five months and would now be made operational again after maintenance work by Chinese experts, sources said.
