The Supreme Court ordered on Monday that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) be formed according to the 18th Amendment to run electoral affairs smoothly. A three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali and Justice Ghulam Rabbani, was hearing a petition filed by TV anchor Mubashar Luqman claiming that the ECP was incomplete according to the 18th Amendment.
Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq told the court that no ECP was working properly in the country at the moment. The chief justice stated that the government had failed to fulfill its legal obligation to form the ECP under the provisions of the 18th Amendment.
