The Karachi Bar Association (KBA) gave a three-day deadline to the Sindh government on Monday for arresting the perpetrators of the recent attack on Advocate Rana Shamshad.
“An extensive protest campaign will be launched if the law enforcers fail to arrest the assailants within three days,” the association’s representatives announced while addressing a press conference at the KBA office.
KBA President Muhammad Aqil Advocate, Vice President Abdul Hameed Advocate, General Secretary Imam Haider Rizvi, Information Secretary Adil Khan Zai and others strongly condemned the attack and demanded the arrest of the culprits.
They said that several incidents have occurred in the past wherein lawyers were wounded and killed, but no culprit has been brought before the court so far.
Police have yet to arrest the elements involved in the killing of lawyers in the April 9 and May 12 incidents when the movement for restoration of an independent judiciary was at its peak, they added.
They said that the government and the law enforcers have failed to provide security to citizens and have never displayed sincerity in arresting culprits behind heinous incidents, leaving the people at the mercy of criminals and terrorists.
On Saturday, unidentified men had opened fire on Advocate Rana Shamshad near the Millennium Mall in the Shahrah-e-Faisal police precincts, leaving the lawyer with four bullet wounds. He was shifted to the nearest hospital where doctors were able to stabilise his condition.
Advocate Rana Shamshad is the information secretary of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s Lawyers Forum and lives in Gulshan-e-Jamal where he was attacked.
KBA representatives have announced boycotting court proceedings and staging protests across the city if the police fail to carry out their duty within three days.
