Prior to the present government, most Basic Health Units (BHUs) were being used for housing buffalos and donkeys, but the situation has remarkably changed now, said Sindh Chief Minister (CM) Syed Qaim Ali Shah on Monday at the CM House in a meeting while reviewing the Sindh People’s Primary Healthcare Initiative (PPHI).
Shah said that providing basic health and education facilities as well as employment and socioeconomic opportunities to the people are just a few of the achievements of the current government.
He ordered forming a committee comprising officers of the departments of Planning and Development, Health and Finance as well as of the District Government with the Health Department’s representatives to review the performance and assess the requirements of the PPHI, and submit a report within three weeks.
He also ordered that there should be no overlapping in various Health Department programmes so as to provide maximum health facilities to the people, particularly those residing in remote and underdeveloped areas of the province.
He said that the PPHI Sindh is supervising 610 BHUs, 29 maternity homes, 378 dispensaries, four Rural Health Centres (RHCs) and eight Unani Shafa Khanas in 12 of the 19 districts of Sindh.
The District Government Jamshoro has signed the agreement; however, the management has yet to take over its responsibilities there, he added.
The CM said that 1,029 of the 1,499 healthcare facilities are operating under the PPHI, whereas the remaining facilities are functioning under the Health Department.
The PPHI has a team of 916 medical doctors; 408 female medical officers; 1,276 dispensaries/HT and 917 lady health visitors/midwives, he added.
He said that 182 health centres that were illegally occupied by the police or local influentials have been vacated and made operational.
PPHI Sindh Project Director Dr Riaz Memon said that the PPHI has introduced mobile ultrasound services and 82,286 free ultrasounds have been carried out so far.
He said that complying with the CM’s directives, Rs 115 million as Sanctioned New Expenditure for 116 out of 156 health facilities have been approved.
The PPHI has added 200 in addition to 425 cold storage points to EPI refrigerators, and around 850 health facilities have been provided with V-Wireless telephone for quick communication and transfer of messages, he added.
Memon said that 60,086 underprivileged patients have been provided with anti-snake venom and anti-rabies vaccine at RHCs for free.
The PPHI has conducted 34,579 health sessions in the past year to spread awareness in the rural population regarding diseases, he added.
He said that 24-hour maternity homes have been made operational in Badin, Kashmore, Sanghar, Tando Muhammad Khan and Mirpurkhas districts as well as an RHC in Bhit Shah.
Three hundred general medical camps and 70 mobile camps were organised and medicines worth Rs 13.728 million were provided to the patients, he added.
Memon said that 1.203 million patients were taken care of at the camps, which included 453 cases of dog bites and 102 of snake bites, whereas 389 deliveries were administered, and 14,029 women and 27,847 children were vaccinated.
