A meeting to discuss ways to eliminate child-beggary would be held tomorrow (Tuesday) at the office of the Sindh Human Rights Minister Nadia Gabol. According to a statement issued on Sunday, the Minister has called upon the authorities, departments and NGOs concerned to discuss the issue of beggary in detail.
A letter has also been issued to the secretaries of the Law and Human Rights, Home and Social Welfare departments; the Karachi CCPO; the Traffic DlG and the UNICEF chief field officer asking them to attend the meeting. The SPARC coordinator and regional manager are also expected to attend the meeting along with all the relevant details and recommendations.
Gabol said that the human rights aspect should not be neglected before adopting, proposing and initiating any action. She also called for establishing rehabilitation centres using the public-private partnership mode to rehabilitate street children and end child-beggary.
