Haitian officials delayed Monday the certification of a clutch of fraud-tainted results from run-off legislative elections just hours before the announced winners were due to take office. The Provisional Electoral Council said it was delaying the certification of 19 legislative results of the March 20 polls “out of concern for transparency and in the higher interest of the nation.”
The news comes days after the United Nations and Haiti’s major donor nations, including the United States, voiced concern over allegations of fraud in final results of the country’s legislative elections. Reversals in a number of legislative races raised doubts about the legitimacy of the voting process, according to Haiti’s main benefactors.
