Oil & gas conundrum

I congratulate Dr Asim Hussain for his appointment as an advisor to the Prime Minister for petroleum and natural resources. Although you have no experience in the oil and gas field, I am sure you can overcome the crises of gas shortage in the country. To support you can hire experts to advise you on technical matters related to petroleum and natural resources.

I appreciate your first action of removing all the managing directors and board of directors of the gas companies because they have failed to overcome the crises of gas shortage and load-shedding.

You may agree with me that one of the main reasons of fuel shortage in the country is government’s monopoly and failure of the past governments’ policies on oil and gas. There is mismanagement and rampant corruption in the oil and gas companies.

Therefore, I suggest a solution for your: all the companies owned by the government should be privatised by offering 50 percent equity shares to the general public 25 percent to the strategic investors with management rights. The word economy is fast becoming a global economy. Therefore, it is imperative that the free market mechanism be encouraged.

The oil & gas regulatory authority should be made more responsible to protect the interests of the consumers. I wish you all the success for rendering a great service to the country.

S T HUSSAIN
