An Earth Day event was organized to mark global Earth Day celebrations at Aitchison College on Friday. The main organizers behind the event were Waste Busters, a Lahore-based recycling company, and Global Pakistan.
Various schools and companies set up stalls and showcased their products including environmental projects. Various activities were also arranged for children, adults and families.
A musical concert, featuring local bands and singers, was the highlight of the event that completely ran on solar energy. The concert featured young bands including The Others, Akmal Qadri, Poor Rich Boy Lifebuoyz and 9TNINE. The show also included a fashion show by STEP based on the theme of recycling.
Waste Buster’s volunteer Ahmad Farooq said the event was quite successful and it gave a message to the youth about how to save energy and use it in an effective manner. He said clean environment was the need of the hour.
Visitors at the concert said that it was unbelievable how the organizers managed to organize such a huge event without using any electricity.
Students from about 30 schools said the event not only gave them an opportunity to entertain themselves but also gave the message of awareness about Earth Day. Stall items like “Gol Gappas” captured the attention of students. Another attendee of the concert said the organizing such a festival at the Aitchison College’s amphitheater was an interesting idea.
Organizers said they had a vision to provide environmental training programs for employees emphasizing individual responsibility for sound environmental management and to work in partnership with their customers, fully focusing on satisfying their needs and expectations. They said the event was a milestone for them.
Students who had won the competitions said the event gave them a chance to spread a positive message for the planet. Others said it was good to see youngsters working for a great cause and added that such events should take place time and again.
