The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Friday announced to introduce a provincial commission for replacing the Higher Education Commission (HEC), currently functioning at the national, in the province.
Rejecting the negative perception over the dissolution the HEC, Minister for Higher Education Qazi Muhammad Asad in his speech during the provincial assembly session said these views had been uttered by those who were against the provincial autonomy and living outside the country.
Qazi said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government would sanction funds for the commission in the upcoming budget, adding that the provincial government was ready for the transfer of HEC to the province.
He revealed that only Rs 5 billion were sanctioned for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa out of the HEC’s total budget of Rs44 billion, which was a sheer injustice, adding that the dissolution would serve the interest of the students. The minister said the provincial government had sanctioned an amount of Rs240 million for PhD students in the current financial year.
He said the private sector universities were working in close coordination with the provincial government in tackling the issue.
