It has taken just three days for the Sindh government to promote at least 1,608 policemen: as many as 505 assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs) have been promoted to sub-inspectors (SIs), 564 head constables (HCs) to ASIs, and 539 constables to head constables, Pakistan Today has learnt.
The promotions of these policemen have created some 2,000 vacancies of police constables, sources told Pakistan Today, claiming that these are likely to be filled after Sindh’s upcoming budget for fiscal year 2011-12.
Sources said that the Sindh Finance Department had approved the promotions of some 505 ASIs to SI with all the perks and privileges. However, the Department had promoted more than 1,100 cops, they added.
A senior Karachi Police official confirmed the report to Pakistan Today, but argued that these promotions were pending since the past couple of years. However, recently the finance department has given a go-ahead with the promotions, he said.
The official claimed that the Sindh Finance Department had allowed the city police to create 505 vacancies of sub inspectors (SIs). Later, Karachi Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Saud Mirza had convened a meeting of the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) on April 18th, 2011 and approved the promotions of at least 505 ASIs to SIs.
The DPC was attended by senior police officials, including DIG (Admin) Sardar Abdul Majeed Dasti and ADIG (Establishment) Malik Altaf Sarwar Awan.
The DPC was convened again by the CCPO on April 19 and 20, where promotions of 564 head constables as ASIs, and 539 police constables as head constables, were approved, sources said.
The promotions of the cops on large-scale would surely improve the police performance, the official argued, adding that some 2,000 new recruitments will be made after the budget.
