Sexual harassment accused Iftikhar Baloch axed

Former Punjab University (PU) Disciplinary Committee head Dr Iftikhar Baloch, who was accused of sexually harassing two women, was terminated from the PU on Thursday. According to sources, several investigations held against the PU College of Earth & Environmental Sciences (CEES) professor had proven him guilty. The PU administration has also issued a notification in this regard. Baloch was already suspended from the varsity due to the allegations against him but now he has been officially dismissed by the varsity administration. Several investigations were held against him including superintendent of police’s (SP) inquiry, Punjab government’s inquiry and an inquiry by the university administration itself. Earlier, Baloch was also targeted by Islami Jamiat-e-Talba (IJT) activists, when he was the head of a disciplinary committee. Objectionable material was also recovered from the office drawer of the professor. The sexual harassment charges against Baloch gained media hype and student organisations held protests against him asking the varsity administration to fire him. Baloch had repeatedly rejected the allegations against him. Commenting on the dismissal of Baloch, PU IJT nazim Zubair Safdar expressed joy saying that the termination of the professor is their victory adding that the IJT is distributing sweets on his termination. He said that people who were holding rallies in favour of Baloch should think about their past activities. The PU IJT nazim demanded restoration of the students suspended by Baloch.
