The International Day of the Erath is celebrated every year on the April 22. It is also called the International Day of Environmental Protection. The purpose of this day is to inspire people all across the globe to protect and appreciate the nature. It was founded in the USA in 1970 and marked the beginning of the modern environmental movement. More than 20 million Americans took part in the peaceful demonstrations in favour of environmental protection. Now it is observed in 175 countries and celebrated by more than half a billion people every year. It is coordinated by the non-profit Earth Day Network which tries to change human behaviour and to provoke policy changes.
Traditionally all people who worry about the environmental problems go outside to combine their forces in planting trees and making flower-beds, tidying up yards and parks and participating in other different nature-conservative measures.
Ironically, here in Pakistan, perhaps, we celebrate this day only in newspapers’ headlines. We do not bother to take concrete steps to improve our deteriorating environment. Hundreds of old-trees are chopped down in the name of widening the roads. In developed countries, before implementation of any development plan and vital tree-cutting, same number of trees are planted at or around the same place. But, this rule does not exist here.
In our northern areas, people have no substitute fuel to trees. This is the major cause of vanishing of our beautiful forests in those areas. There is a dire need to educate our people and provide alternate fuel to save trees for our next generation.
