The provincial culture minister on Thursday announced that her department would organise a reception in the honour of famous Sufi singer Abida Parveen, when she returns to Sindh in May. Sindh Culture Minister Sassui Palijo said this while on a visit to the residence of Parveen in Islamabad. She remained with the renowned artist for some time and inquired about her health.
She said the Sindh Culture Department would provide an opportunity to the singer’s admirers to see her perform by organising a reception in her honour. Lauding Parveen’s remarkable work and performance in the field of new and modern singing especially in ‘sufiyana kalaam’, the culture minister said that the Sindhi-descent singer is one of the foremost exponents of Sufi music, using a repertoire of songs by Sufi poets.
Palijo further said that the people of Sindh were anxiously waiting to see the Sufi singer in her performances again.
Parveen has sung together with many singers in Urdu, Sindhi, Saraiki, Punjabi and Persian and is considered one of the finest Sufi vocalists of the modern era. Thanking the minister, the ailing singer said that she would soon return to those fond of her singing in Sindh.
