LAHORE – WAPDA ended Army’s hegemony in the 43rd National Athletics Championship being held here at the Punjab Stadium. By the time this report was filed, WAPDA pocketed 13 gold medals as against seven of Army. By the evening, WAPDA won gold medals through Azhar Abbas, Razia Sultana, Rabia Ashiq and Ali Muhammad in hammer throw, 1500m (Women) and 800 metres races while Mohammad Sajjad of PAF won gold medal in 110 mertres hurdles race. Army got its gold medals on the day in discus throw through Basharat Ali, in 10,000 metres from Muhammad Arshad and 200 metres from Liaqat Ali.
Earlier on the opening day night, Liaqat Ali and Ashraf Ali of Wapda won gold medals in 100 metres race and shot putt respectively while Wapda’s Sumera Tayyaba, Mariyum Babar and Rabia Ashiq brought gold medals in 100 metres race, triple jump and 10,000 metres race. Another interesting thing to note is that Wapda won 11 gold medals through their female athletes and two by men while Army men got seven gold medals for their department.
