LAHORE – The 43rd National Athletics Championship started here at the Punjab Stadium on Tuesday morning. The event is sponsored by Pepsi. PML-Q League Parliamentarian Humayoun Akhtar was the chief guest of the opening ceremony. Apart from the heat categories of different disciplines, four finals were decided on the opening day of the meet. Bilqees Hashami of WAPDA won the gold medal in females pole vault. She dashed in the height of 2.30 metres. She was followed by Army’s Sidra Bashir while Nasreen Akhtar of WAPDA secured third place.
In the female shot putt finals, Zeenat Parveen of WAPDA threw the putt 13.76 metres away to secure the gold medal while Army’s Saima Bibi was placed second and Nazia Kausar of WAPDA was third in the event. Sobia of HEC, Attiya Rasool of Army and Abida Changazi of Railways were fourth, fifth and sixth in the event. Samia Sahr of WAPDA brought another gold medal for her department when she jumped 1.57 metres high to become first while Shazia of WAPDA was second and Sadia Iqbal of Punjab was third. In the only men’s final held at the time of filing this report, Imran Yasin of PAF won gold medal in javelin throw with 67.52 metres throw. Ifran Hussain of WAPDA was second and Sanaullah of Army was third.
