LAHORE – Jaago Tehreek, a group of like-minded people, on Tuesday demanded a ban on dual nationality holders from contesting the next general election. Jaago Tehreek has initiated a campaign to strengthen the political acumen of citizens from Lahore. Renowned journalist Qayyum Nizami, Scientist Dr Muhammad Sadiq and Engineer Abdul Majeed Khan are among the main founders of the organisation. They have requested the general public, through their message, that they should cast their votes for honest and socially active candidates in the next general election.
According to Jaago Tehreek, there is a need to promote democratic culture even in the organisation of political parties and take part in national elections and selection of party candidates should be done by the workers of primary units of political parties through secret balloting. Likewise, instead of nominating office-bearers from the primary unit to central levels, they should be elected under the supervision of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) through secret balloting.
Jaago Tehreek also appealed to the public that if there is no party candidate in a constituency up to the desired level of the people of that constituency, then people should bring forward a person from that area having the desired level of qualities to contest elections as an independent candidate. Jaago Tehreek intends to pursue this campaign by spreading information through brochures, pamphlets, posters and seminars at local, regional and national level.
