WAPDA, Army advance in Inter-dept Rugby

LAHORE – The Inter-department Rugby Tournament 15-a-side tournament kicked off today with WAPDA taking on Police and Army taking on the Navy. In the first match, WAPDA beat Police 21-0. WAPDA’s experienced national team player Mohammad Babar played a captain’s game by scoring two tries in the game.
Police played extremely well but failed to utilise the momentum. In the second match, favourites Army defeated Navy 29-0. Army players improvised throughout the game to secure the victory. Before the start of the pool games, the department teams witnessed a super league match between Pakistan’s top clubs, Lahore Rams and Islamabad Jins. Lahore Rams took full advantage of the home field and took the match 10-7.
The Lahore-Islamabad 2011 super league series now stands at Islamabad 2 wins versus Lahore’s 1 win. The match gave all the department teams a chance to witness some high level rugby. This is the first time the departments are playing in the 15s format and this will help improve the level of rugby in Pakistan. The final will be played on Sunday, April 24.
