FAISALABAD – Dozens of women recipients of government aid under Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) gathered outside Kanjwani Post Office Samundary to protest against the embezzlement of funds by the post office staff.
Reportedly, they said that they had been coming to the post office daily for many days but the authorities were turning them away on lame excuses to force them to offer bribes to get their money. They added that the post office staff had started deducting Rs 1,000 from each case.
The notables from the area including Muhammad Nawaz Jandaran, Muhammad Ali Baloch, Muhammad Haneef Jandaran and Muhammad Hussain, also condemned the plunder of the post office workers who were cheating the widows and disabled men and women registered under the scheme. They threatened that if a severe disciplinary action was not taken against the corrupt workers, the protest might turn violent.
They appealed to the government to ensure the smooth transfer of money to the recipients. The victims, including Parveen Bibi, Shameem Bibi, Mumtaz Bibi, Bakhat Bhari and Haleema Bibi, alleged that the post office staff hurt their feeling as they were always treating them as beggars.
In another similar incident, the police were called to disperse a large crowd of women who blocked Jarranwala Road to protest against the pilferage of BISP funds. These women said Rs 2,000 were being deducted from their money by the local organisers of the scheme.
