ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Chief Election Commissioner Justice Rtd Hamid Ali Mirza on Saturday notified that Dr Asim Hussain was elected unopposed as a result of bye-election to the Senate of Pakistan. Asim was elected unopposed against a general seat from Sindh fallen vacant due to resignation of Senator Dr Khatu Mal Jeewan for the unexpired term of office that is due to expire on March 11, 2015, said a statement issued here.
Former advisor to the prime minister on Petroleum, who is believed to be a close friend of President Asif Ali Zardai would likely to be given an important portfolio, sources said. Meanwhile, the fate of Khatu Mal Jeewan who resigned from the senate seat to become a member of national assembly (MNA) on a seat reserved for minorities is still hanging in balance.
He resigned from the Senate to become MNA on a seat which was lying vacated after the killing of minorities minister Shahbaz Bhatti. However, another Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader from minorities, Michael Javed, filed a petition with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and pleaded to be notified against the vacant seat as he was on priority list at the time of Bhatti’s killing.
