KARACHI – Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah has issued orders for curbing targeted killings in Karachi and improving the overall law and order situation, Local Government Minister Agha Siraj Durrani said on Saturday.
“The directives have been issued in light of the suggestions presented by the ministerial committee of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM),” Durrani, a ministerial committee member, said while talking to the media during a visit to the provincial election commission’s office.
He was visiting the office with the chief minister and other PPP leaders for having the nomination papers of the PPP’s candidate for Senate, Dr Asim Hussain, scrutinised.
The local government minister had recently attended the ministerial committee’s meeting at the Chief Minister’s House, following which he had informed the media that a five-point proposal had been prepared for curbing targeted killings and other criminal and terror activities.
Responding to a question, he said that he had also held a detailed meeting with MQM leader, Dr Farooq Sattar at the Governor’s House before attending the ministerial committee’s meeting.
At that meeting, he added, the political situation and the issues pending legislation, including local government system bill, were discussed.
“MQM leaders have sought two to three days for building a consensus on these bills,” he said.
He said that he has advised the chief minister to convene a session of the Sindh Assembly before its budget session so that necessary legislation could be made at the earliest.
