LONDON – Differences emerged in the British coalition government over the issue of immigration as one of the important cabinet ministers launched attack on Prime Minister Cameron, branding him as ‘very unwise’ in comments about Britain needing “good immigration rather than mass immigration”.
UK Business Secretary Vince Cable, a Liberal Democrat, said, “The comments from the prime minister are very unwise. I do understand there is an election coming but talk of mass immigration risks inflaming the extremism to which he and I are both strongly opposed.”
Cable also challenged Cameron’s interpretation of government policy. “The reference to the tens of thousands of immigrants rather than hundreds of thousands is not part of the coalition agreement, it is Tory party policy only,” he added.
In a speech on immigration, David Cameron said that he was addressing an issue that was of high public importance and had been ignored for too long.
