JALALABAD – At least four soldiers were killed and eight others injured when a suicide bomber attacked an Afghan army base in eastern Laghman province on Saturday, health officials in neighboring Nangarhar province said.
“So far four killed army personnel and eight injured people have been admitted to Jalalabad hospital this morning,” a doctor who declined to be named said.
He said the death toll could rise since some injured people were in critical conditions.
“I can confirm there was an explosion near army garrison in Gambiray area of Laghman province at around 7:30 a.m. local time, there might be casualties,” an army press officer named Hatiffi said.
Hatiffi said the area was cordoned off by army personnel and an investigation was underway.
However, officials from press department of the defense ministry confirmed the suicide bomb attack, the second in two days.
Provincial police chief of Kandahar province Khan Mohammad Mujahid was killed on Friday when a suicide bomber in police uniform targeted police department in Kandahar city, the capital of Kandahar province.
Two other police officials were also killed in the powerful blast.
