KARACHI – The only constant in Maliha Peracha’s body of work has been her point of reference: “my sense of nostalgia, bringing in subjects from my shared and unshared world.”
Peracha explains that whether it begins with a personal action, an experience of culture and society, or an intellectual exploration, there is a peculiar relationship between expectation and discovery – the point at which one recognises something unfamiliar within the previously seen or something familiar within the previously unseen.
“The imagery I use is based extensively on ponderings, everyday life, rarity, singularity, recurrence, unpredictability and real people with the power to affect our real world,” she says.
She adds that it is strange to talk about the intent of her work as her intent is to work, to express, to be realised, to present in reverence for all she once cherished and perhaps still does.
