‘Incidents of targeted killings have reduced’

KARACHI – Incidents of target killings have reduced in the city and action against criminals involved in targeted killings and extortions is being accelerated to get more results, said Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik on Thursday.
He expressed these views while talking to journalists at the office of Sindh Election Commission, where he had arrived along with Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and leaders of coalition parties of the PPP-led Sindh government, to file nomination papers of Dr Asim as PPP’s candidate for vacant seat in the Senate.
Malik said the Sindh government under the chief minister has taken satisfactory measures for curbing targeted killings and other criminal activities in the city.
Responding to a question regarding complaints in the ongoing housing census, the interior minister said that it was a serious matter and should not be politicised. The personnel of Pakistan Rangers, Sindh would also be available with the police to control the situation in disturbed areas of the city during the housing census process, he added.
To another query regarding NADRA’s report about presence of 1.3 million fake CNIC holders in Sindh, Malik responded that the figure was not accurate as the actual number of such CNICs was around 90,000.
Earlier, Awami National Party (ANP) Sindh chapter President Shahi Syed had met the Sindh chief minister and the federal interior minister at the Chief Minister’s House.
According to an official handout, the ANP leader said that his party wanted peace in the province of Sindh specifically in Karachi and assured that the ANP was fully committed to cooperate with the government in this regard.
Syed assured that the ANP will not support any criminal elements and fully cooperate with the law enforcement agencies (LEAs) in action against the criminals.
Shah and Malik maintained that strict action will be taken against every criminal associated with any group or party without any discrimination, adding that police, Rangers and other LEAs have been directed to make appropriate and coordinated efforts against persons involved in targeted killings, extortions and other anti-social activities.
“No criminal will be spared and prompt action will be taken against the persons involved in crime,” they added.
Malik had earlier called on the provincial chief minister to discuss various issues including the law and order situation prevailing in the province of Sindh particularly in Karachi.
Various measures were discussed to curb activities of criminals, target killers and extortionists and decisions taken to take prompt and stern action against such anti-social elements.
