HEC to lose authority to verify degrees.

ISLAMABAD – The ruling Party Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and biggest opposition Party Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) have joined hands over reformation of Higher Education Commission.
A Private TV Channel quoted sources as saying that the talks between PPP and PML-N over restructuring of HEC were successful and both Parties have devised a draft for amendment in HEC Ordinance 2002.
Under the proposed amendment in the ordinance, the Higher Education Commission would remain to exist but its Powers would be slashed, sources said.
Both Parties have agreed to devolve HEC to Provinces but not completely but some of its Powers would be devolved under the 18th amendment.
The Provinces would have control to release funds to varsities in their respective regions.
Under the proposed amendment, HEC would also lose authority to verify degrees.
The universities would be authorized to verify educational degrees.
