ISLAMABAD – Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani on Wednesday told the National Assembly that diplomatic pressure was being applied on the US to stop drone attacks in the Tribal Areas.
In response to a point of order raised by Leader of the Opposition in the NA Nisar Ali Khan, the prime minister said Pakistan was using diplomatic channels to compel the US to stop drone attacks because they were counter-productive.
He said security forces conducted successful operation against militants, but Pakistan was facing difficulties in eliminating terrorists because whenever a drone attack took place, it worked to unite the militants and the tribal people.
Gilani also hailed parliament and said the entire nation was united in the fight against terrorism, adding that the leadership of both Pakistan and Afghanistan were united against the drone attacks as they were not in favour of both the countries.
“Now there is a realisation all over the world that no war on terror can be won without the support of Pakistan and Hamid Karzai himself has conceded that Pakistan is the part of the solution instead of part of the problem,” Gilani said.
He said terrorism, law and order and economy were interlinked and until the issues of terrorism or law and order were not controlled, no foreign investment would come to Pakistan.
