KARACHI – Two men allegedly involved in extorting ‘Rs 15 million during the last 15 days’ were arrested by the police on Tuesday. They were stated to be a part of the gang, whose four alleged members were arrested a few days ago.
Addressing a press conference, South Zone Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Iqbal Mehmood said the suspects identified as Amir and Yaseen, used to threaten traders and businessmen and extort money on the name of notorious gangster Baba Ladla.
“We have recovered 11 cell phones and SIMs that these people were using to threaten the businessmen,” said Mehmood, adding ‘they had made Rs 15 million through extortion in the city in the past 15 days.’ The DIG, however, declined to comment whether the men had any connection with any political party or even with the gangsters running loose in the city. “They were part of a gang which included some suspects we have already arrested named Sheraan, Arbab Marri, Saleem Marri and Amir. This gang targeted traders and businessmen in the areas of Muhammad Ali Society, Clifton, Defence, Kharadar and Saddar,” said Mehmood.
He added that the gang leader identified as Khalid is still at large. The traders had observed a shutter down strike last week to protest the increasing criminal activities in the city especially extortion. They alleged that more and more gangsters were threatening them for their lives, family and property if their demands for money were not met.
