LAHORE – PCB Director General and former batting maestro Javed Miandad has highlighted the importance of merit in the selection of the players in the national team instead of recruiting blue-eyed boys. Talking to journalists here on the sidelines of the training camp Tuesday, Miandad sounded sentimental about his continuous altercations with the board officials, blaming them for his refusal to take the coaching assignment. He also referred to his past coaching jobs when he was asked to step down. “I decided then not to take the coaching again,” he added.
He said that Pakistan cricket is a problem child in which not only the team but also the board has issues which need to be addressed. He also stated that the apart from violation of merit, another issue is of the lack of bench strength. “We do not have quality batsmen to fill up the gap, that is why we opt for the tried and tested batsmen,” he maintained. He added that had there been other players available for each place, the selected players would automatically have performed to their best.
“No one is paying heed to developing the backup strength and once we start doing this an automatic circle will develop and players will start coming in,” he added. He added: “No one is looking for future and we keep on repeating the mistakes.” He added that only those players should be selected who perform. He further said that a team of coaching staff confuses things up and there should be one coach who would holds all the authority and takes all the responsibility.
