ISLAMABAD – Chief Justice Supreme Court, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Wednesday criticised Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on its role in Steel Mills corruption and losses case.
He said if FIA was unable to investigate then the responsibility can be given to another institution.
CJ said FIA was unable to catch any ‘big fish’ in the case yet, a private TV reported.
The apex court has taken up a suo motu case relating to corruption and huge losses suffered by the Steel Mills.
FIA Sindh Director Moazzam Jah Ansari said on March 10 hearing that out of recoverable and non-recoverable losses to the mills of Rs26.5 billion estimated in 2008-09, Rs. 221 million loss was reported in hiring of ships, Rs194 million because of undue favours and Rs. 244 million suffered in storage of raw material.
He said one of the reasons for the losses was overstaffing because about 17,000 people had been employed by the mills against its capacity of 5,000.
The chief justice ordered the FIA director on March 10 to continue conducting the probe independently from the facts and figures compiled by an audit company.
