KASUR – People have admired the benevolent act of Sufi Muhammad Anwar who organized mass marriages ceremony of 101 couples in Kasur College Ground.
They were of the view that there were many more deserving people whose daughters were turning old because their parents could not afford dowry for them. Certain such families told Pakistan Today that their daughters were sitting at home awaiting God-sent blessings in the shape of an arrangement for their dowries.
They said they could not bring their daughters to such open marriage ceremonies because of their family customs and family pressure. Amjed, a participant of the marriage ceremony, said dowry was the main curse, affecting many poor and middle-class families and added that because of unavailability of it, many girls were not getting married. He demanded the government help such deserving families in one way or the other. The noble act of Sufi Anwar was not an ordinary one and all the philanthropists in the society should follow it, Hameeda, 65, said.
She maintained that there were many people in the country who had plenty of wealth, but they lacked courage to spend their wealth for the poor, deserving and helpless section of the society. She said that she saluted the parents and grand parents of Sufi Anwar for inculcating sympathies and love for the poor into him. The marriage ceremony was also attended by a lot of people, including MNA Sheikh Waseem and MPA Naeem Safdar Ansari.
