ISLAMABAD – The Supreme Court on Monday directed Balochistan chief secretary to appear before it today (Tuesday) and explain as to what measures province had taken to protect the life and property of the people there. A three-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali and Justice Ghulam Rabbani was hearing a petition filed by President Balochistan High Court Bar Association against the incidents of target killings, kidnapping for ransom. The court also directed the chief secretary to take instructions from Balochistan’s chief minister to take the corrective measures.
Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq, Additional Advocate General Balochistan Azam Khattak and Tariq Mahmood advocate also appeared before the court on notice. The chief justice observed that nobody’s life was being protected in the province adding that even the DIG’s house came under attack. “What measures are being taken by the law enforcement agencies in the province to control the situation”, he asked Additional Advocate General. Attorney General submitted that long term and short term policies were needed to controlling the law and order situation. “Somebody has to inform us as to whether any solid strategy is being adopted to improve the law and order situation”, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali asked.
The chief justice observed that the government should be thankful to the petitioners who had filed such an important petition of public importance. The chief Justice further said that people from Balochistan were protesting outside Parliament House but nobody was taking any notice of it. He told the additional advocate general of Balochistan to visit the protester’s camp.
