SAARC Baseball C’ship begins

LAHORE – The SAARC Baseball Championship rolled into action at the Punjab Stadium here on Monday with teams from Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and hosts Pakistan featuring in the event. Pakistan and Afghanistan will play the inaugural match of the championship while other teams have also reached the city.
Pakistan Baseball Federation President Shaukat Javed said that it was an encouraging thing for the federation that it was playing its part for the revival of the international sport in the country. Khawar Shah, secretary federation and officials of all the participating team managers, were also present on the occasion. Javed said that the championship will be played on league basis and the final match will be played on April 17. He also thanked the Sri Lanka team for their participation particularly in wake of the attack on their cricket team.
He further stated that India, which did not participate in any Asian level event since five years, pulled out due to certain issues and Bangladesh team which also promised participation also did not come. In the end he said that the team having maximum points will be the winner and Pakistan and Sri Lanka teams would have a tough encounter.
