KARACHI – Federal Inter-provincial Coordination Minister Mian Raza Rabbani and Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah on Sunday decided to convene a joint meeting of the vice-chancellors (VCs) of all state-run universities in the province.
Rabbani met Shah at the Chief Minister’s House and discussed the devolution of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) along with other federal government departments to the provinces under the 18th Constitutional Amendment as well as other related issues.
Rabbani said that the process is under way to devolve the HEC to the provinces.
“Funding to all universities will continue and students, who are receiving education abroad under scholarships, will not be affected,” he said.
He claimed that the VCs of all universities in a meeting on Saturday supported the devolution of HEC to the provinces and also appreciated the performance of the Implementation Commission on the 18th Constitutional Amendment.
Rabbani told Shah that so far, 10 departments have been devolved to the provinces under the 18th Constitutional Amendment while the process is under way for the transfer of more departments.
“Around 15 to 20 ministries would be devolved to the provinces by June 2011,” he noted.
