LAHORE – The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has earned international fame as a transparent, corruption-free, service-oriented and people-friendly department, which has also significantly reduced the ratio of accidents and crimes on all national highways and motorways, NHMP Inspector General (IG) Dr Wasim Kausar said on Sunday.
He was talking to journalists at the inauguration ceremony of a swimming pool and computer lab at the NHMP Training Institute, Sheikhupura. Kausar said that the performance of driving schools and mobile education units, timely and effective response to 130 helpline calls, culture of soft policing, observation of moral ethics while dealing with a commuter, briefing and education of commuters and reduction in accidents and crime ratio are some of the features of the NHMP.
He said that the NHMP succeeded in lowering the accident ratio up to 74 percent by creating a better sense of discipline on roads and road safety awareness through briefing and education. Kausar said that during the last 14 years, the NHMP equally treated every commuter irrespective of rank and status and changed the culture of policing.
The NHMP IG said that the department helps around 3,500 people on a daily basis via its 130 helpline service, which is available round the clock. During the present year, the NHMP foiled more than 162 robbery attempts, arrested more than 1,555 criminals, recovered huge amount of illegal weapons, prohibited drugs and narcotics and more than 800 snatched vehicles besides reuniting 600 runaway, kidnapped and lost children with their respective families.
